Spend two days discovering how to turn beautiful wooden bowls from British wood on the pole lathe (foot-pedal powered lathe) with Flo Hamer. Suitable for complete beginners and improvers. Throughout the weekend you'll learn:

  • How to understand the properties of different British timbers and choose the right timber for bowl turning

  • How to use an axe safely to make a 'blank'.

  • All about different mandrels to mount your blanks on the lathe

  • Using and understanding different types of hand made turning tools

  • Finishing touches

You'll have the chance to make at least two bowls giving a chance to consolidate knowledge throughout the weekend.

The days can be physically demanding so you’ll need a practical level of fitness or a good level of stamina!

Instructions

The course will begin at 9.30am and end at 4.30pm on each day.

The outside workshop is covered to protect from the rain, but it can get cold. Please check the weather forecast before coming and dress appropriately. Whatever the weather, please wear sturdy boots or shoes that cover the whole foot.

Hot drinks and snacks are provided, but please bring your own lunch. There is a microwave available for heating up meals.

Parking/Entrance Details: If coming by car, please part in Begbrook Social Club and then enter via the side gate to the main entrance. If walking, cycling or taking the bus (bus stops nearby) then please enter via the side gate.
